CHAPTER SEVEN

‘IT WAS like something out of a movie, Mum. A car and a chauffeur. Can you believe it?’

‘He’s such a nice man, your Jack.’

‘He’s not my Jack, Mum.’

But Lizzie let her eyes drift shut for a heartbeat’s wishful thinking. Jack Rousseau was, without doubt, the most astonishing man she’d ever met and he had been unbelievably kind in the face of her family’s adversity, but what man in his right mind would be interested in her?

Not only was she minus a kidney and pathetically weak herself right now, she had a sick child and a mother who was about to be taken to Theatre to get a new hip.

Crazy.

Her whole world was crazy at the moment.

‘I’m sorry about the apartment, Mum. I have no idea what’s going to happen. I’ll make some enquiries today and at least see if I get can some clothes and things out for us.’

‘I’ll be here for a few days anyway, darling. I’m sure things will be sorted by then.’ Maggie’s eyes were drifting shut thanks to the level of pain relief she’d been given. ‘How’s Misty?’

‘I’m going to go and see her while you’re in Theatre.’

‘I’m sorry…’ Maggie’s voice trembled. ‘I’ve caused you extra worry.’

Lizzie squeezed her hand. ‘It’s a blessing in disguise, if you ask me. OK, the timing wasn’t the best but you’re getting a new hip. You won’t be languishing on a waiting list for goodness knows how long. It’s the best Christmas present you could ask for, really.’

‘But how are you?’

‘Fine. Just…tired.’

More like she’d had the stuffing completely knocked out of her but Maggie didn’t need to hear that. Fortunately she was too drowsy to notice how much of an effort it was for Lizzie to walk alongside the bed as she was taken away for surgery. Or that she got horribly dizzy when she bent to kiss her mother.

‘Are you OK?’ the orderly asked.

Lizzie nodded, giving Maggie’s hand a final squeeze. ‘I’ll be in to see you as soon as they let me. I love you.’

Maggie’s words were a little slurred. ‘Give Misty a kiss from Nanna.’

‘I will.’

To her joy, Misty was awake enough to return the kiss. And she was smiling. The PICU nurse told Lizzie that permission might be given to transfer her to the children’s ward today. Dr Kingsley was going to decide when he did his rounds.

Dr Kingsley had more than the company of his junior doctors on his rounds. Lizzie felt her heart rate pick up and the bone-numbing fatigue ebb noticeably when Jack smiled at her. Good grief…the man only had to be breathing the same air as she was and the world seemed a much brighter place. She was dangerously close to falling head over heels in love with him.

Dave was more than happy with Misty’s progress but he frowned noticeably when he took a second look at Lizzie.
