CHAPTER SEVEN
âIT WAS like something out of a movie, Mum. A car and a chauffeur. Can you believe it?â
âHeâs such a nice man, your Jack.â
âHeâs not my Jack, Mum.â
But Lizzie let her eyes drift shut for a heartbeatâs wishful thinking. Jack Rousseau was, without doubt, the most astonishing man sheâd ever met and he had been unbelievably kind in the face of her familyâs adversity, but what man in his right mind would be interested in her?
Not only was she minus a kidney and pathetically weak herself right now, she had a sick child and a mother who was about to be taken to Theatre to get a new hip.
Crazy.
Her whole world was crazy at the moment.
âIâm sorry about the apartment, Mum. I have no idea whatâs going to happen. Iâll make some enquiries today and at least see if I get can some clothes and things out for us.â
âIâll be here for a few days anyway, darling. Iâm sure things will be sorted by then.â Maggieâs eyes were drifting shut thanks to the level of pain relief sheâd been given. âHowâs Misty?â
âIâm going to go and see her while youâre in Theatre.â
âIâm sorryâ¦â Maggieâs voice trembled. âIâve caused you extra worry.â
Lizzie squeezed her hand. âItâs a blessing in disguise, if you ask me. OK, the timing wasnât the best but youâre getting a new hip. You wonât be languishing on a waiting list for goodness knows how long. Itâs the best Christmas present you could ask for, really.â
âBut how are you?â
âFine. Justâ¦tired.â
More like sheâd had the stuffing completely knocked out of her but Maggie didnât need to hear that. Fortunately she was too drowsy to notice how much of an effort it was for Lizzie to walk alongside the bed as she was taken away for surgery. Or that she got horribly dizzy when she bent to kiss her mother.
âAre you OK?â the orderly asked.
Lizzie nodded, giving Maggieâs hand a final squeeze. âIâll be in to see you as soon as they let me. I love you.â
Maggieâs words were a little slurred. âGive Misty a kiss from Nanna.â
âI will.â
To her joy, Misty was awake enough to return the kiss. And she was smiling. The PICU nurse told Lizzie that permission might be given to transfer her to the childrenâs ward today. Dr Kingsley was going to decide when he did his rounds.
Dr Kingsley had more than the company of his junior doctors on his rounds. Lizzie felt her heart rate pick up and the bone-numbing fatigue ebb noticeably when Jack smiled at her. Good griefâ¦the man only had to be breathing the same air as she was and the world seemed a much brighter place. She was dangerously close to falling head over heels in love with him.
Dave was more than happy with Mistyâs progress but he frowned noticeably when he took a second look at Lizzie.
